There are too many options out there that are better at this price point. Hayman Limited does not manufacture any of its products itself, but instead packages the spirits of other distilleries. This rum is created by the Hampden Estate in Jamaica, which starts with a combination of molasses, cane juice and sugar syrup. This sugary substance is fermented into a slightly alcoholic blend, which is then distilled in a traditional still to make the new rum.
The nose of this highly aromatic rum leads to overripe banana, followed by leather, spices and molasses. When slurping, fruity esters and a hint of sweetness are created, but without the stickiness of added sugar. The finish is more tobacco, spices and citrus grapefruit.

The label on the back says it’s a mix of plummer and Wedderburn rums. “Plummer” and “Wedderburn” happen to be names in a classification system used by the British Admiralty, and I can’t find much more about that particular system, but I’ll keep looking. Smith & Cross is a 50/50 mix of Wedderburn under 1 year old and Plummer under 18 months to 3 years old. I find that these age ranges leave a lot of room for differences in taste and texture from batch to batch. I envision that each rum could be mixed with multiple barrels of itself before mixing the two varieties. In any case, this is a young rum compared to what I’ve been drinking lately.
And the only other flavor that cuts through the bitterness is the sweetness, as this is a cocktail that is just too sweet with no depth or fullness to make up for. Of course, the molasses and brown sugar you would expect from a rum of this color. But tobacco and lime also provide even more aromas that are reminiscent of the tropics.
Smith And Cross
There is a sense of place in all of these things and they held nothing back. And everything changes slightly when you add water or your giant ice cube starts to melt. Its golden color means more aging than you might expect – the oldest rum here is three years old and most are much younger. The great tradition of this style is reflected in the famous drink recipes that specifically call for Jamaican rum.

Jamaica- Smith & Cross Jamaica Rum is distilled in the pot with notes of caramelized bananas, exotic fruits and spices with an earthy finish. This is an old school rum with no cold filtration or no added sugar now common. This is the second fruity rum I’ve come across lately, the other is the Jamaican Mezan. The Mezan also smells of pineapple and other tropical fruits, but in the Mezan there are fresh fruit flavors, while in the Smith & Cross they are very ripe.
Rate Smith And Cross Navy Strength
Make no mistake, this is not a rum to drink by today’s standards. After taking the first dose, wait a minute for it to open before starting testing. We recommend exploring the profile in Jamaica Rum Daquiri first and from there to other classics.
I would rate it 10/10, but it’s so dominant that I can’t call it perfect. Give it to a friend as a chance and watch their face. It’s a bit strange considering that Smith & Cross was specifically designed to make cocktails, but frankly this is one of my favorite rums.
Rum Review: Smith & Cross Traditional Jamaican Rum
Appleton Reserve and Prusser’s rums are so much better on their own and mixed together. There are aromas of molasses, caramel and oak. The entry begins gently with a palate of molasses, spices and fruits. The finish ends warmed up with milk chocolate and caramel. I will not refuse if offered to me directly, but no buyback for me.
In reality, its richness and sweetness seem to hold me back more than the actual test. That being said, I highly recommend Smith and Cross if your into Jamaican style rums. It is a pure molasses-based rum, without coloring or flavoring, just a mixture of a 6-month-old rum and a 3-year-old rum.
Of his A / B, the rotten fruit in Doctor Bird was the strongest? It was hard for me to get close to my nose. I know the rotten and funky esters make up part of the appeal of Jamaican rum, but I was kind of hoping the forgotten banana was more of a distillery than a specific island. If you want to mix and create the amazing tiki drinks of yesteryear, you need something with real personality, something intense and full of flavor (and without all the additives and sweeteners!). 57% ABV (50% by weight or 100th English proof) was the traditional force required by the British Royal Navy. In this test, a spilled alcohol would not prevent the gunpowder from catching fire.
At the end we get the funk again, which is in the scent, which tastes like you’ve just bitten into a slightly rotten mango (again only the overripe and slightly yeasty aspects) that lasts for a while. A blend of heavy Wedderburn and medium strength plummer style rum, Smith and Cross is an excellent Jamaican rum that is making waves in the bar world. Bottled at 57%, navy blue strength and intense flavor, it is good for cocktails but also has a depth that rewards those who enjoy a sip of rum.
Funk And Dunder
It’s like falling out of an airplane without a parachute. If you smell the guy, you get a bit of Appleton mixed in with the kind of pussers. They give you a pile of sausages with so much flavor that your mouth will turn red and your brain will even go crazy. Even on Coke, this is a fat rum that will get your Coke out, hit it a few times, wear a dress and call it Daddy. It starts like this, lick an oak barrel, now burn down your house and put out a bunch of smoke, add a little Appleton / Pussers mix and that’s what you have.
There are no dark fruits in the mezan and the funk is more present, but the beginning pineapple definitely connects the two rums. That said, the flavors seem to have changed quite a bit. Instead of molasses first, I now get a touch of dark chocolate, followed by fruity undertones and sweetness. There’s an almost bitter stab here that wasn’t seen before. Smith & Cross is a key rum component in great cocktails, with a heavy emphasis on tiki cocktails like Mai Tai.
